Singapore Bus Service searched for super low floor double decker after the commissioned of Volvo B10BLE and Scania L94UB. As the success of Dennis Trident in Hong Kong, SBS placed an order for 20 units with Duple Metsec bodyworks in 1998 for trial. Dennis Trident is the second Dennis product in SBS. Instead of the Dart and Trident in the fleet, SBS received one Dominator prototype for trial-run in 1982. This Dominator was then purchased by KMB and as an advanced trainer after the trial completed.

Due to the bulky order from Hong Kong, there were a delay of the delivery of the Trident chassis and all were delivered to Singapore in the end of 1999. In addition, the government of Singapore extended the lifespan of public buses and released the pressure on replacing the aging bus. As a result, SBS decided to refurbish the convention single decker to air-conditioned single decker instead of assembled the Dennis Trident. All Dennis Trident were arranged to receive their bodies in the third to fourth quarter of 2000, unfortunately, there were some delay again due to problems of the body parts and hence, the first Dennis Trident was entered service in 2001. All SBS Dennis Trident featured with sliding doors, no upper deck emergency exit at the rear. There are no any facilities or wheelchair parking bay for disabled in this batch of Dennis Trident.

Volvo had established a long-term relationships with SBS and they delivered a Super Olympian demonstrator with Volgren bodywork in 1999 prior the commissioned of Trident. This made Dennis Trident become the second low floor double decker instead of the first in Singapore. To go one step further, Singapore is the second country or area to place order for Trident, however, it is the fourth to operate. Dennis Trident liked the Dart, cannot make any success in Singapore and when SBS Transit searched for new super low floor double decker, the order went to Volvo.
