城巴自二零一二年引進國產單層青年巴士之後,隊中的單層巴士便漸次由德國及英國製產品,變成中國製產品為主導,與隊中英國廠商生產的雙層巴士相映成趣。二零一五年藉著向城巴提供電動巴士作試驗,比亞迪成為了繼青年客車之後,城巴隊中另一國產巴士品牌。

是次城巴試驗的三架比亞迪K9R電動巴士,全是得到來自香港特區政府於二零一二年,透過環境保護處給予的資助而購買。在整個電動巴士試驗計劃中,新創建交通服務有限公司,獲分配十架電動巴士作試驗,其中五架新車訂單由比亞迪奪得。比亞迪向新創建提供的是旗下K9R電動巴士,長度只有十一點七米,長度上略短於九巴早年試驗的K9D,但更能夠適應港島區路窄多彎的路面環境。比亞迪早於二零一五年七月交付首架新車予城巴,而城巴亦馬上向外界宣傳首部電動巴士抵港消息,可惜隨後發現巴士有若干地方需作出修正,故此巴士被運回廠方完成有關調校後才再運回香港。

經過一段時間測試及驗車程序,首架城巴比亞迪K9R於二零一五年十一月二十七日出牌,車隊編號緊接猛獅NL262巴士(1581 -1583),載客量共六十八人,包括三十一個座位。1581(TV3095)於十二月二十七日首航11號線,餘下兩架比亞迪電動巴士則安排行走12及25A路線,三條路線都途經陡斜路面,更能全面測試電動巴士能否適合本港的運作環境。

在測試初期,比亞迪電動巴士曾經因不同機件及操作問題,需要暫時停駛及安排返回車廠作出檢查及修正後,才再安排到路面服務乘客,直到二零一六年十月中前,巴士出車率表現穩定,但隨後因剎車系統被指於雨天下容易令車輪出現打滑情況,全數比亞迪電動巴士被安排回廠檢修,直到十二月下旬仍未獲安排復出服務乘客。

Since 2012 when City Bus first introduced the YoungMan JNP6105GR, the single decker in the fleet gradually changed form Britain and German products to China made brand in contrast to the double decker, which dominated by the UK brand. BYD become the second supplier from China in City Bus in 2015 with their K9R electric bus.

With the fund by the Environmental Protection Department of the HKSAR Government, NWS Transport, the parent company of City Bus, acquired a batch of 10 electric bus for trial and 5 of the order went to BYD. Benefited from the overall length of K9R is 11.7m, BYD K9R suitable for the narrow road conditions on the Island. The first BYD K9R was delivered in Jul., 2015 and City Bus immediate announced to the public the trial of electric bus will start soon. However, this K9R need to send back to BYD for further adjustments and finally returned to Hong Kong in Nov., 2015.

Finally, City Bus registered first BYD K9R on 27 Nov., 2015 and the fleet number started from 1581, just after the last MAN NL262 purchased by City Bus. The BYD K9R offer 31 seatings plus 37 standees and the first of the three, 1581(TV3095) debut on route 11 on 27 Dec., 2015 while the remaining two deployed on route 12 and 25A afterwards. All three routes that chosen for City Bus testing the BYD electric bus are passing through with steep road and the performance of the BYD electric bus under these circumstances, will be one of the most important factor to determine whether they are suitable for operation in Hong Kong.

The performance of BYD K9R can be considered satisfactory though they need to temporarily suspend service for further mechanical adjustments during the beginning stage of testing. Unfortunately, it was reported that the braking system would cause skidding during rainy days and all BYD electric buses were off from service for checking since mid. of Oct., 2016. Until the end of Dec., 2016, the BYD K9R electric bus still not return to the revenue service.
